Suzanne Gibson

Christopher and Suzanne both received their training in Commercial Art and have always had a love for all forms of artistic expression. They spent the first 18 years of their marriage raising three children and running a part time decorative arts business. After their children all moved out of the house, they focused their attention on their art and opened RIVER'S EDGE STUDIO in 2009. This is a fulfillment of a life-long dream to open their own place and work on their art full-time.

If you have 'imperfect' vision, there is no reason that you cannot still be an artist. There are many artists with vision loss. Art is all sbout showing others what you see. Find the beauty that you see and share it with other. It will take creativity to find a way to do so, but all the more worth it.While all vision loss is not the same, Suzanne gladly accepts vision impaired students and will work with each inividual to find what works for them.

Our Story

Suzanne Gibson, one of the owners of RIVER'S EDGE STUDIO has a genetic eye disorder called Starguards. The symptoms are a large field of central vision loss along with light sensitivity. In recent years it has gotten worse and she has had to find different ways to express herself visually. The image above was painted to explain Suzanne's vision. All the black area is where she can see normally. The snowflake and circle are in the way. It is a definite obstacle, but her focus is on what she can do instead of what she cannot.

What Color Art Should I Buy?

Where Do I Hang My Painting ?

The general rule of thumb for hanging art is eye level. Of course this is different for everyone and there are more things to consider. This rule should be helpful at least in one common mistake, hanging your art too high. It can be tempting to center your art both vertically and horizontally in an effort to get it right. This leads to your art floating ominously above you and forcing you to look up at it. Also, keep in mind what else is around the art. Is it above a sofa or hall table? Most paintings should be hung no higher than 12 above the piece of furniture it relates to. Small paintings could look funny that close. You may need to hang a grouping or move it to a better location, maybe a spot between 2 doorways. Get a friend to help you and look at it at several heights. Do you center the painting in the room or on the furniture? Most of the time you should center it on the furniture or grouping of furniture (2 chairs, etc.) Centering in the room will only look lopsided if your sofa is off to one side. Consider balancing out the empty space with a shelf or large plant. On a hall table with a lamp on it, hang the painting to one side. DO NOT level it with the lamp. You should never hang a painting level with another object. Breaking the plane will look much more interesting. Of course, a group of paintings can be hung at the same level as each other. Lastly, make sure you use proper picture hanging hooks. A nail can be pulled down by the weight of your painting, cutting a groove in your wallboard and eventually your painting could fall. Picture hanging hooks are very inexpensive and distribute the weight evenly so this will not happen. So remember1 Start with the general rule of eye level2 Consider the furniture it will relate to.3 Center on the items it is above not on the room.4 When other objects are near, hang slightly higher.5 Use the proper hardware.6 Get a friend to help, its more fun anyway!

What color art should I buy?

When purchasing art for the home, people often are concerned with the color of the art for he room they plan to place it in. I have a beige room and brown sofa, or my walls are blue are the statements I often hear when visitors to our gallery are considering a purchase. If you have a neutral colored room, great! You can use any painting in any color. A blue room? Dont limit yourself to purchasing art the way you buy drapes. You will own the art longer than your walls will be blue. The art you should buy is the piece that you love.Consider style more than color when purchasing art. If your room is traditional a modern art piece may seem out of place. Loose the temptation to match your art to your room. It will get lost that way. When you purchase an original art piece, you want people to see it. Something that is the total opposite or a completely different color than anything that is in your room draws your eye to it.Frame your piece with consideration to both the art and your room. This is where you can match. If you have dark wood molding, go ahead and get a dark frame, but use a frame that also suits the piece. A traditional piece may warrant a much more ornate frame than a modern piece. Like wise, if you are starting with a painting and using it as an inspiration piece, make sure the dominant color in the painting is NOT a dominant color in the room. Lets say you have a painting of daisies that is almost all yellows. Blue walls will show the yellow off fantastically. Yellow walls will make your art disappear.So remember the most important rule to purchasing art. Buy what you love!

Passport will focus on the hard things in this life that young people are going through, such as running away from home, teen pregnancy, making fun of people, lying, murder, suicide, and marital problems like cheating and abuse. Our teaching philosophy is that everyone has something to express and we will try to help each individual learn the techniques to express themselves visually in their own unique way.All classes can be scheduled at times convenient to you. Call a few friends and schedule some fun!Vision impaired students are welcome.Private lessons available. Ages listed are guidelines only.

One Day Classes

Mommy & Me

Ages 3 5 + adult 1 hour $8 per class including materials

Spend time with your young friend making memories through art projects designed for your preschooler to be able to accomplish with your help.

Assemblage Art Age 7 & up1 ½ hours $15 per student includes materials (please bring junk) Students will assemble pieces of junk to create a dimensional art piece

Decorative Bowl

Ages 7 & up 1 ½ hours $15 materials included.

Make a unique fabric covered bowl.

Fabric Landscapes

Ages 7 & up1 ½ hours $15 includes materials

Students will create a landscape using cut fabric pieces to create a unique look

Students will create a portrait using small bits of torn paper.

Please bring a photo printed out at 8 x 10 on regular printer paper.

Just like Andy Warhol. Create your own masterpiece.

Packing Tape Sculpture

Ages 10 & up 1 ½ hours $15 materials included.

Make a sculpture of an arm or foot out of packing tape and paint.

Metal Sculpture Ages 12 - adult 2 hours $20 (includes Materials) Students will create a face in metal and pack with cement. Work will need to be left to dry and picked up the following week.
